Nothing to do with Dr Who really!

Hi,
let's just leave it with TMDR meets kraftwerk then.

Does anyone know whether this is a sanctioned cover? I won't disrtibute unless I know that it is legal.

It's a really nice and different version. Same 'taste' as the original but slightly up-tempo and modernised.

If anyone can clarify the legalities I'll post it on my web pages for your downloading pleasure!

I'll answer this question, and my picks will change within a week. OK, top 5 are:

1. Screen Kiss
2. Urges
3. I Scare Myself (a cover, I know, but I LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!)
4. Dissident
5. Hot Sauce

Ask me again in a few days, and it'll change. I Love You Goodbye is going through my head right now....

Favorites..

I have to say that 'One of my Submarines' is a favorite. I love the way his lyrics create a story. . .
I also like the songs 'Airwaves', 'Screen Kiss', and 'I scare myself', because if you don't scare yourself now and then you probably don't exist on this plane. And i have to say that NEO and well, practically every song on 'Journey to the Mind's Eye' has a calming, yet introspective affect on my psyche... almost like Floyd and a good joint. 8)

I would have to say that mine are:

Mulu the Rain Forest
I Love You, Goodbye
One Of Our Submarines
Leipzig
The Flat Earth

Actually, back in 1995 for my then girlfriend( who I eventually married), I bought Retrospectacle for her birthday. She kind of looked puzzled at first then gave it a listen, then another, and then another. I made a fan out of her eventually. Her list is almost the same as mine, except she says that her favorite would have to be Pulp Culture.

That was one of the first CDs I bought my wife as well, back when we first started going out in the mid'90s. Funny coincidence!

Weightless.... my favourite record of all time. Beyond that - it gets too difficult - i'd have to put down, like, 10 or something....

Tough question. The order of preference shifts around, depending on my circumstances. However, if you hold a gun to my teddy's head and force me to choose the Top Three that have been pretty much constant, I'd say:

- Flying North
- One of our Submarines
- Urban Tribal

Beyond that, they will all hit the CD deck at some point each year.

More like TMDR meets Fischerspooner; I'm assuming it's a legal cover; Boole has it on their web site: http://boole.org/audio/bsides.php

TMDR's Golden Age of Wireless arrived at just the right time in my life (age 13) to influence me in ways I'll never fully appreciate, I suspect. That first album was a revelation to me in terms of its musical and timbral freshness. While my training had been, and continued to be in the 'classical' world of music, TMDR's material taught me more about musical drama than opera could have at that age. His songs were like 4 minute operettas to me and I ate it up! While I ended up as a professional ('classical') composer, TMDR's music has always been a source of inspiration and excitement to me.

SO... my favorites are certainly heavily weighed toward the early end of his output, but there are some gems from all points on TMDR's path:

Top 5 (no order, really)

One of Our Submarines (elegant songwriting, Mr. Dolby!)
Radio Silence (Guitar version only)
The Flat Earth (one of the best, effortless feel-good songs ever penned)
Desire As (technically a Prefab Sprout song, but Dolby's fingerprints are ALL OVER that one. It sounds like a precursor to Blimp to me)
Pulp Culture (THE BEST pop song bridge I've ever heard)

Pretty much anything from the first 3 solo records gives me great listening pleasure. The material on Astronauts and Mind's Eye seemed less substantial to me... at least they get fewer turns in my CD player.

Welcome to the Flat Earth, Xase. Hope you wander around & meet the crew. This is a great place.

Favorite Songs

Postby korky123 » Mon Jun 26, 2006 7:22 am

Let's see:

1. Flat Earth
2. Budapest By Blimp
3. Screen Kiss
4. Europa

Just starting to explore other Dolby offerings. Ordering Gate to the Minds Eye today. Some tracks sound really kind of spacey and dreamlike (almost techno-pop/soul); if I were to describe it. Really different from other tracks I have heard -- interesting. 8)

An initial list (in order) would be....

1. Weightless
2. Cloudburst at Shingle Street
3. The Flat Earth
4. Screen Kiss
5. One of our Submarines
6. Wind Power
7. Europa and the Pirate Twins
8. Mulu (The Rain Forest)
9. Flying North
10. I Live in a Suitcase
11. White City
12. Urges
13. Radio Silence

I want to know where I can get this 'guitar version' of Radio Silence everyone keeps mentioning???

Bear in mind that this is a soundtrack to a collection of 3D computer graphics. A good portion of the "differentness" is attributable to the fact that it's designed to support what is essentially a montage of different animations. Try to get your hands on the DVD/video for full appreciation of Gate.

I'm partial to those Simmon's Drum heavy type songs. I'm must have listened to that extended version of Flying North for a whole month back in '83 becuase of that drum "solo"

YES! YES! YES! Space Intruder Detector is right - the extended drum break on the Flying North 12" is incredible. The mixing is so clever becasue it sounds quadrophonic to my stereo ears. It really captures the feel of flying from pole to pole and the expanse of travelling through the upper air.

For this reason that mix would go in my top 10 today. Got to be a contender for a retro CD release if ever there is one. As is the guitar version of Radio Silence. And Flying North is in because I love flying and everything to do with the Airwaves.

Other contenders for the top 10 - Quantum Mechanic, only because the bassline is so thunderous it would sound great live - how about it next time Mr.Dolby?

Valley Of The Minds Eye. So good me and Mrs.98 had it played at our wedding for one of the first dances. Theres a story there but it'll have to wait, I've just been bleeped.

See ya. 98

Fave track debate

Postby expatbore » Tue Jun 27, 2006 12:33 pm

Fascinating thread. Extraordinary number of people love the more atmospheric tracks from Golden Age and Flat Earth. I think I would go with:
- Commercial Breakup (it just completely rocks)
- Neon Sisters (very sad, great drums, harder edged)
- Eastern Bloc (a real grower, with Europa samples and that guitar solo!)
- Dissidents (reminds me too much of University night clubs)

That Patti Smith thread reminds me - TMDR really should write more for female vox. New Toy with Lene Lovich really doesn't do it for me!

Popular: Airwaves , Budapest By Blimp ........... Less known: Urges , Leipzig , Field Work

I should give honorable mention to the brilliant keyboard solo on "Commercial Breakup".
