If Thomas has an interview on the Tour DVD, what are some questions you would like him to answer in the interview?

Since many people that met you during this tour were in awe and at a loss for words, has there been anyone in your life that put you in the same place? In other words, have there been any famous people you met that left you tongue tied or star struck?

Questions and Answers

Postby korky123 » Sat Aug 26, 2006 10:52 am

Well, I have a few that might be interesting:

----------------

1. Background information on his childhood; schools attended, etc. What were his main areas study.

2. Who are his main musical influences, and what part of their talents does he admire and use in his own music.

3. His children: are they following in his musical footsteps?

4. Does he ever plan to have some of his forum members jam with him live?

5. Is George Clinton as crazy as he appears to be! :D

-----------------

Just a few for now!!

Probably really daft question, but something which might be interesting! Mine would be:

1.What are your thoughts on the after life? Do you believe in another world or not?

Thank you for posting this Lunesse! It would make my day if Thomas answered that...maybe it's just wishful thinking but am just so excited at the DVD!!

What I'd ask

Postby SpaceIntruderDetector » Sat Aug 26, 2006 7:09 pm

1. What first attracted you to music technology and why did you associate yourself so strongly with it early in your career and most recently on the sole inhabitant tour?

2. What sort of things inspire you enough to write a song about and what influences the style for that song. ( ie. jazzy, electro, blues, regge, etc.)

3. What sort of steps do you go through to compose a song ;do you start with a drum track or develop a bassline, melody first, etc.

4. If you could meet one person now or in the past who would that be and why?

5. What five albums would you you take if you stuck on a stranded island and why?

6. Five favorite films?

Here are some of my questions:

1. Which song or songs were the most difficult to write/create? Which song or songs were the easiest?

2. Is there anyone you'd really like to collaborate with musically and if so, who would that be?

Thanks!

Which single piece of musical equipment could you not be without?

If stranded on the proverbial desert island which synth would you take. (Obviously, this desert island is quite advanced and has electricity!!!)

1. "Outside of music and technology what other interests do you have?"

2. "What's the fascination with Spam?" as in One of Our Submarines and Beauty of a Dream.

3. "Do you ever plan to release your songs as cut down midi files on the internet as an alternative to releasing sheet music?"

Great idea Lunesse - Thanks.

Questions for DVD

Postby Kenmode » Mon Aug 28, 2006 11:38 pm

Really good to get the opportunity to do this. I will restrict myself to one question...

Do you get more pleasure from your atomospheric/wistful songs (such as Flat Earth, Screen Kiss) than the madcap tunes such as Hot Sauce?

A lot of my questions got answered at the Scala evening and I’m sure the well versed answers will appear on the DVD like:-

Why did you get out of the mainstream music industry?

Why move to the West Coast of the USA?

What have you been doing while you have been away?

Why come back to music?

A few questions I would like answered are:-

What other interests do you have outside the music?

What is the Flat Earth Society? Why that name?

You have a Blog on your website, do you feel blogging can expose too much of your personal life?

You have some new material, how much have you got and how long have you been working on it?

Now your back what do you hope to achieve?

What is fame and do you crave it?

I am just so pleased ‘Thomas Dolby’ is back. I love that the character of the young bespectacled scientist has returned as the mature goggled, trench coat ‘Morpheus’ type.
But most of all I’m pleased at the prospect of hearing more diverse music from the one artist I think can do just about anything from Reggae to Swing from Rock to Pop.

Morpheus. I like that. He could teach a few young musicians a thing or two.

What does he think of recent electronic music, like artists such as Aphex Twin, who uses a lot of the same sort of old equipment Thomas did back in the 80s.....

What advice does he have for people looking to get into synthesizer playing or other music industry related things?

And maybe, what kind of a synth would he recommend people start with? Like, is there a sort of gateway one easy to learn that can lead to more complicated ones?

That would just, like, make my day. Especially if my name was mentioned. lol j/k about the name part. ;)

What is your average day like?

When you write a song, which comes first- the music or the lyrics?

What is your favorite song that you have written?

If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?

If you could collaborate with any musician or musicians-alive or dead, who would it be?

Ii love the song "Beauty of a Dream and have been a long fan of the Grateful Dead's music. I was wondering how was the collaboration with Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir set up? Did you request it? Did you meet the GD members??

Lunesse,

Wow would u really ask him some of these questions?

OK, just in case I would like to know:

If he was rebourn. would he do the same thing again, or would he want a more mundane existance?

Another one would be:

Does he ever believe that his uncle in the song One of our Submarines has ever heard it? (I guess I'm asking many questions by asking that one!)

Miles Davis

Postby Omar Cayasso » Sun Sep 10, 2006 8:29 pm

Was there any truth to the rumor that TD was going to produce a Miles Davis track? If so, what brought on that circumstance and the nature of the music that was allegedly planned to produce?

Analog vs. digital: which is cooler?! ;^)

Postby mizmusic » Wed Sep 13, 2006 10:10 pm

Two questions, if I may...

Firstly, Thomas, have you considered updating "Airwaves" the same amazing way you did "The Flat Earth" [at
the TED conference] and "She Blinded Me..." for the "80's Stripped" CD? Both of those reworkings are awesome. :D

{question ends, observations begin.... Now, I myself certainly don't hear anything wrong with "Airwaves" --I think
it's gorgeous, and I know I'm not the only one who thinks so--but then, you're the artist, and you can probably hear
things that the rest of us can't.}

Secondly, how are you finding the up-to-date digital music-creation technology to work with, with the "dB/decibel" settings and so on, as compared to the analog technology that from the sound of things worked perfectly well except for the occasional scent of overheating vacuum tubes?

Edit: Just realized the other night that Thomas...er, you, if you're reading this, Thomas... essentially answered my second question, whether he/you have/has seen it or not, during the live radio interview he/you did with our
new pal "meatsock" on WHUS FM on Sept. 22nd, which I was lucky enough to hear live. He/you basically said that analog technology was actually crap (!), and that people seem to have an inferiority complex about newer, micro-computer-
based technology, versus the analog stuff. Well, shut MY mouth. Hee hee! ;)

Love and pending interrogations which lead to pastry abuse,
Kara! :)

What is the sound of one hand clapping? A very soft
whoosh, as far as I'm concerned. Air displacement, you know.

I was able to ask him how did Henry "really" fall down the elevator shaft?

1) What inspired the Coda of "Screen Kiss"?
2) Where's the best place to find schematics to synthesysers for circuit bending?
3) What inspired "Budapest by Blimp"...I get in inkling it regards the holocaust
4) What he's using for his live rig for sequencing.
5) Why he hasn't built a Theremin that puts out MIDI CC (control change) messages....and if he does, sell the plans!

Regards
