"Bench!" ?

Anyone care to explain the significance of the word "bench" on the proposed t-shirts to those of us who dropped out early?

I'm loving the oatmeal and gold combo and chose the Mulu design, even though I was in 17 Hills. Is that an octopus or what?

Benches were an omnipotent feature of the game. Inevitable floatsam.

In my Tribe, BENCH! also became a communal greeting, curse word (especially when inflicted with nasty flotsam), and a Huzzah! alternative, not to mention the most used 'ingredient' in many of my patents.

...and, it was the first gift in 'The 12 Days of Flotsam' song (thanks to Always Pining).

In the A Map of the Floating City Cookery Book, the first step in every recipe would be

"Firstly, take your bench..."

One of my early patents was for an inter-ship transportation system involving a bench, some tethers, and a couple of umbrellas; but it was rejected without explanation. Not silly enough, perhaps?

I've considered decorating my Christmas tree with flotsam this year. Twine instead of garland, at least one bench, and I've found plastic vultures for sale online. I'm not putting any Vasoline-filled gloves up there, though!

I might only add that it is my firm belief that at every Dolby show from now onwards, the call of BENCH!! shall rise like a wave of pure joy/pain from the crowd to wash over the stage, why even TMDR has been heard to cry BENCH!!

I forsee droves of bench cultists lurking around parks at night, worshiping those rather dented and defaced constructions of wood and steel. All chanting "bench" repeatedly". Heaven forfend they notice the swarms of moths around the lamp posts...
