Aliens Ate My Buick Full-Sized Movie Poster

Postby MiniCoopGuy » Wed Apr 05, 2006 7:27 am

Hey everyone! I have a sad story to share, but hopefully someone can help me. I recently purchased a full sized movie poster of Alien's Ate My Buick. The poster was near excellent before it was shipped to me. During shipping the lovely US postal service crushed the tube and my poster was thrashed. While I could file a claim and be reimbursed for some "fair value" of the poster, I would have to turn it into the postal service for the claim and therefore relinquish ownership. In all my years of collecting I'd never seen this poster before so I know it is extremely rare.

Does anyone have a copy of this poster they would be willing to part with that is mint or near mint? I can have my copy repaired but the estimates are $250-300 for color restoration and preservation of the poster. This was my Holy Grail of collectibles since I have a home theatre and it was to be my center piece. I was also hoping to have Thomas sign it at one of the upcoming shows I'm attending. I've even purchased a theatre poster light box to show off this poster in true movie fashion just like in the real theatres.

If you have an extra copy of this poster and are willing to sell it I would be forever in your debt if we can come to an arrangment. Also, if someone knows a cheaper way to restore the poster I will be happy to entertain suggestions. I'm at a loss. Please let me know if you can help.

Thanks everyone!!!!!

MiniCoop - I may have a second copy of this guy. I'll check in my closet o' posters tonight. A few years ago, I was in massive poster-collecting mode, and I scoured the Internet for little gems here and there, sometimes coming upon a treasure trove of goodies...

(In fact - and this will make you cringe - a copy of that poster fell out of its tube last night when I was rummaging for a sweater in the back of the closet, and said poster is currently laid out on my bedroom floor as I type. The challenges of having a lot of posters and very little wall space..)

Minicoop, I don't have a copy (if I manage to snag a concert poster from the Sole Inhabitant tour it'll be the first for me, ever) but I wanted to post a sympathy note about your bad luck. That is just terrible!!

I was wondering if, since it's already trashed, you could go ahead and artistically alter it. You know, give it a new life as something else? If Thomas's face is intact, cut it out.. use some of the words.. put those Lost Toy People to work.. mount them in a display case and put other odds and ends with it? It would be a great home theater shadow box/conversation piece, at least. You could put in your ticket stubs, perhaps a House of Blues menu, wherever you're going to see him. The speeding ticket you're going to get when you're running late for the show... wait, scratch that last part.

Elaine. Good ideas...except for the speeding ticket! :D I'll probably go ahead and frame it since is still 70% intact. Maybe one day when I get a nice bonus check from work I'll pay to have it professionally restored. Who knows? For now, when people ask what happened to my poster I'll just tell them to ship all their stuff FedEx.

A word to the wise...

MiniCoopGuy,
up to 300 bucks to restore a poster is mad. If there is one thing I have learnt over the past 8 years ebay trading it is that there is always tomorrow. There is always another one. With the exception of truly unique items everything is made in some volumes and it is very likely that at some time in the future another will be sold and it will got for 30 bucks not 300.

I'll keep my eyes open and if I find one I'll let you know. Damn! Forget that last sentence... I'll keep my eyes open and if I find one it's yours for $299! =)

Follow the advice. Cut it up and make a conversation piece. You'll get another.

Cheers,
Jon

For instance - I saw someone listing a copy of the soundtrack to Gothic on vinyl for near a 100, and bought it a few months later in the same condition as the first for ten.
"If a song was a road, I would ride through the night to you..."
"Shutting down the freight line, took away our main light - No more workin' overtime!"
