Weightless cover

Postby eelucid8 » Mon Jun 14, 2010 2:26 pm

Hello fellow FES members,
In addition to penning crackpot interpretations of TDMR lyrics, I am a multi-instrumentalist / producer with 8 solo albums. I recorded a cover of Weightless awhile back and let it loose on the Alloy listserver but failed to make it available to the good people here in the forum. Below is a link to it, as well as a link to my website and mailing list (a free mp3 every month!) I'm obviously heavily influenced by Dolby as well as Prefab Sprout, Everything But The Girl, and many others. Hope you like what you hear!

REALLY dig your cover, William! I love the irony of the 'heavy' treatment of weightless. Very well done.

Thanks Beech! I never thought about it that way. I love your interpretation. I think the most artistic license I took was eliminating the last lyric in attempts to keep the spirit of weightlessness aloft. I always have wondered if Thomas has heard it or what he thinks of it. I fear of course that he thinks my version is ham-fisted butchery! I do credit the discerning ears of Alloy in forcing me to produce to a whole new level though. I like to think that standard has applied to many of my other tracks since then. So props to all of you.

William, I absolutely love this cover! I'm catching up after awhile off the forum and just had a listen. Excellent, excellent job, thank you for posting it. I think the heaviness of the basic groove makes the interludes sound even more weightless by contrast.

edit; those SFX at head & tail, really sounds like a rest stop on the NJ Turnpike - I'm guessing the "Dolly Madison"??

The ambient sfx are Vienna and the church bells are actually a metal ashtray being hit with a pen!

Funny, I also used Vienna ambience on the "Urban Tribal" project. Here's the thread to check that out:

I made it to the site but no time to do much more than subscribe to the newsletter, happy to do that based on what I heard. Time to work again now.
