The English Beat / The Fixx & The Alarm – Kansas City

Postby wadcorp » Mon Jul 21, 2008 9:07 am

Saturday night was the 20 July show featuring The English Beat / The Fixx & The Alarm, on their "Rocking The Colonies Tour".

Wouldn't you know, it would turn out to be the hottest day of the year thusfar, hitting around 97°F (36.1°C).

The high heat didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the crowd. MiniCoopGuy & I were front & centre, a good place to be as there was NO SEATING!! Three bands, four & a half hours of music. My legs still feel the burn.

Managed to get a few shots of the various groups. Pardon the low-angle. :)

First on stage was The Alarm. Mike Peters was in top form, belting out the songs in spite of the heat. Glad to see Mike has recovered from his bout with cancer, as his is a very noteworth voice in the rock & roll pantheon. The Alarm played a number of the classic cuts, and a fair amount from their new album, Guerilla Tactics, which just came out.

And yes, they played "Sixty-Eight Guns" so I was very happy. :)

MiniCoopGuy just can't wait for The Alarm to come out!

Image

Mike's energy level was amazing. He gave it 110% through the entire show.

And, a look back at the crowd at The Crossroads. Not too many youngsters here! :)

More to come…

Part Two: The Fixx

I'd heard that The Fixx were fairly lackluster on this tour, wedged in between The Alarm & The English Beat. Not so. They were in top form, wish some very choice sonic textures going on.

The Fixx were - and still are - Cy Curnin on lead vocals, keyboardist Rupert Greenall, guitarist Jamie West-Oram and
drummer Adam Woods, and have reacquired fan-favorite bassist Dan K. Brown, who spent nearly a decade with the Fixx. (from the band's website bio)

Image

Close enough to get a shot of the set list. Very cool! :)

Image

Cy in action. A very different look from his early 1980s period. I was thinking he looks much more like a crew-cut Anthony Bourdain now.

Image

Jaime West-Oram shredding the guitar, while wearing a Roxy Music "Country Life" t-shirt. What a juxtaposition. Dan K. Brown on bass in the background.

Cy, drummer Adam Woods, and Dan K. Brown.

"Okay, let's dial it up to eleven…"

Image

A better shot of Jaime.

Image

Best I could get of Rupert Greenall, who's keyboard rig was on the opposite side of the stage from where I was. :(

"Red Skies At Night", audience delight…

I'll second that: I love some of the fixx's tracks, to see them still putting out the noise is esp wonderful, thanks!

Dan the Man is playing my bass!

I really wish that I had seen that. I was toying with the idea of flying out but it was smack bang in the middle of my summer vacation.

I've only ever seen The Fixx once and that is really not enough.

Cheers for the great photos,
Jon

Nothing yet, but their webmaster said by tomorrow.

*sniff, sniff* Wadcorp...do you have any picks of my all-time favorite 80s band...The English Beat?

Having trouble with posting photos on here. I shrank a few English Beat photos, but I took many many more. Enjoy!

MiniCoopGuy: You need to have a place to host your images.

I have a website where my images reside. I go through my shots, clean 'em up, then upload them to my site.

Gotta have a place you can put them. :)

Part Three: The English Beat

Yes, it was really "The Dave Wakeling Show", as there was a conspicuous absence of other original members. But at the very least, we had The Man who wrote all these great tunes. And boy did he take some of the best out for a workout.

Image

Dave, close up & personal. In spite of the heat (and poor Dave was sweating something fierce…) he kept up a breakneck pace of tunes all through the set.

Image

Give me more bass! :)

Image

Close-up of Dave's English Beat custom guitar.

Image

"Tenderness, where is the tenderness…" Hey, isn't that a General Public tune? :)

Image

"Mirror in the bathroom, please talk free, the door is locked, just you and me…"

Image

Was taking a snap of a friend, Gretchen, and Dave bent down to better get into the shot!

Image

MiniCoop & I met the saxaphone player after the set. He was really wailing. MiniCoop: what was his name? :?:

Image

By the way, remember that set-list shot from The Fixx? Guess who ended up with it? :)

Guess who ended up with The English Beat set-list? :?:

Good show!

Wadcorp: great shots!

Fernando was the sax player and a very nice guy. Still haven't listened to his CD yet.

Hmm, the English Beat set list? I wonder who has that?

Okay, I have the set list. :)

I'm not even a fan, but have positvely excited by the 'in depth and personal team effort coverage' of this one event.

Hmm… How about a bit more.

Sorry, no audio. It was just my (older) digital camera. Knew better than to try to take a video camera in.

The English Beat, 1

Caution! This is a 3.3MB download.
