Duran Duran- Yeah or Yuch?!

Postby Micistm » Fri Feb 18, 2011 6:11 pm

Just interested in seeing what the general vibe is in regard to the band Duran Duran.

Just curious after a post in another topic basically scoffing at Duran, and was surprised that it still happens. When I was a young pup it was quite unhip to be a Durannie, and in my wee group I was the only 'outed' fan. A knew a couple of mates that still were, but kept their albums well hidden!

Anyway, totally subjective-all music is- are you a fan of Duran Duran, or no?

IMO they always got a bad rap in the '80s due to the fanbase being screaming last-gen Justin Bieber tweenie types. But I always thought that was a bit unfair. Sure it was straight out pop music, but to me it was quite unique... lyrically, musically, and had an unusual depth in many cases. I still enjoy it now and many of their songs and albums are unfairly underrated.

Thoughts?

At the risk of falling into a 'Limahl' type trap, I do enjoy a lot of their music although I prefer their later stuff as opposed to the 'Rio', 'Wild Boys' era.

I'm patiently waiting for the remaster of the 'Wedding Album' which I think is a terrific collection of songs - 'Ordinary Day,' Come Undone', 'UMF', Sin Of The City' and, my favourite, 'Drowning Man'.

Even though the 'Pop Trash' album was largely awful, I think 'Lava Lamp' is one of their best as is 'Undergoing Treatment' from 'Medazzaland'.

'Astronaut' also had some great tunes such as 'Want You More' and 'Bedroom Toys'. I didn't bother with their last release and I can't say I'm likely to rush out and buy 'All You Need Is Now' until I can listen to the full songs on youtube.

Which reminds me of that old chestnut - What's got 500 legs and no pubic hair? The front row of a Duran Duran concert.

I would classify myself as a on-again, off-again Duran fan. I actually got into the group when their popularity was on the fall (after Wild Boys) but was a bit manic about them anyways (bought all the pins, posters, books, shirts, ect, ect).

Then other groups and such kinda dragged me away, but I always came back for more on each album release. I'm not too enamored with their latest effort but thats totally my opinion, maybe the follow up will be more to my liking, who knows.

In the end, I'm still in the Yeah! Camp, heck why else would I choose a user name that can be shortened to DD?

More yeah than yuch, never really took them seriously, but then and again, a good song, or video, came out. Careless Memories (that nobody liked but me), Hungry Like The Wolf were some favourites, as well as the Bond song, and then they disappeared, to return with the mighty untitled record known as the Wedding Album, a truly great work, never before or after equalled by them...

So, they were OK, but they were not Japan (who were, and still are, great, and timeless).
But Japan could learn a thing or two about a proper re-release scheme, DDs recent issues with bonus DVDs etc look absolutely great.

They're okay by me. I like the earlier stuff - but the only song on my MP3 is 'Ordinary World'. That's a tune, that is.

For double-barrel names though, I veered more toward Talk Talk...

I know them mostly through their video hits. I'm not sure if I should be embarrassed to say that I like them.

I think Duran Duran are a great band, and they have shown more staying power than many of the big time 80s hits. I think pegging them as a boy band or a simple pop fluff band is a mistake that only people who have never really listened to them are likely to make. Its snobbery for the most part. I think they were about as much a boy band as the Beatles were. Are you going to hate the Beatles because they had rows of hysterical young girls at their concerts? If you are one of these scoffers then you probably would with some remark about how the Beatles are... wait for it... "Overrated".

Sorry that's just too brilliant and original a thought for me.

Also I think Kajagoogoo could have been almost as big, if they hadn't joined the game so late, and been so over the top with their appearance when everyone was starting to calm down and go the New romantic route. If you listen to their albums they actually have some really great sounding tracks, with some top notch synth work.

DD were and still are brilliant. Ok they have released some questionable material over the years but so have most artists with a large back catalog. Prince anyone...

Anyway, they are still producing good stuff and I have never been ashamed to admit that I like them a lot.

With many bands that 'I like' I can name a couple of songs instantly that I like. With DD I can name dozens.

"Oh my God! What's this!"

Duran Duran: a group that was sexy as hell back in the day with provocative lyrics and physical appearance. Even in their latest video as they're singing in front of tin foil...they're STILL sexy!

What I like about them is that they change with the passage of time. They don't try to sing to the youngsters 13-24, but to the fans who enjoyed them in the 80s. Quite refreshing!

All you need is NOW!

Must admit I *am* liking the new album. It nods to the Rio era quite heavily. Check the Chauffeur alike:

Oh dear, a DD thread.

I have no idea how many Duran Duran concerts I have been to. TONS. From huge outdoor stadiums to small, 300 ticket shows in the "lesser" eras. They rise and fall but are always there. I really hope they make it up to the Pacific Northwest this year as they tour around, now that my kiddo is old enough for me to go out at night here and there. =)

Thomas has had to deal with me swooning over Simon for over a decade (they are less than 3 weeks apart in age). "What IS it about them?" he once asked, and in interviews often states he couldn't complete with Simon's looks, something I know many TD fans beg to differ on. ;)

They had the looks of a boy band but they created themselves. Not some dream of marketing music execs put together to make cash.

It is not something easy to answer. I found an article once where someone said as a concert review, something to the extent of "and there they were, on the stage. It was FUCKING DURAN DURAN, right THERE."

For someone who is a fan looking out, that' nails it, without saying anything useful. It's FUCKING DURAN DURAN.

I was, am, and will long-time be a Duranie.

They just have a something that is special. And not just something the little girls understand, their music stands tall without their looks entering into it.

That said, they have had some REAL flops. I did not like Red Carpet Massacre at all...and there are a lot of folks who have never even heard of the "Liberty" album.
I am really happy with the new album, released digitally with more new material coming out on a physical version in a little over a week from now. They have embraced who they are and stopped trying, for now, to be something else. Hopefully that success is a fire to keep them going. For me it was going back in time while standing where I am now in my life, all at once. Bravo.

A show at the Fillmore in San Francisco that is coming up soon sold out in TWO MINUTES. Not bad for guys that age, still working hard and still creating.

They just have that magic, I don't know what it is, but they have it.

Simon's twitter account is HILARIOUS, and worth having on your list.

http://twitter.com/SimonJCLeBON

I could go on, but I won't. I think they are fabulous, full of talent, willing to take risks and recover from them, and of course, all look fabulous in eyeliner.

Also, Stubbs and DD....perfect. I could drown in their bbq and with DD as a live soundtrack? Heaven.

It doesn't appear that DD is hitting many American states this time around. They seemed to have bypassed the Northwest all together. They were in Redmond, Washington a while back, but I didn't have anyone who would go with me. :(

Maybe I'll book a flight to the UK. I see GOBS of dates there!

Read the DD bio by Steve Malins, it is an interesting read on the highs & lows of the band.
Yeah, they've had their good and bad stuff, like most artists-there's few that consistantly produce masterpieces so I'd let them away with that. Albums like Pop Trash & Liberty, albums overlooked for the most part still have some real gems throughout. Someone else not me IMO is a gorgeous track tragically overlooked, Do you believe in Shame is another ripper that surprises people when I'm playing it in the car.
Even Red Carpet that many didn't like (due to much Timberland production sound I think) has some stuff like Box full O honey which I like.
The new album comes out this month and I'll be grabbing it. :)

It's a mini-tour in the US. Still a week open in April, but who knows what their booking agent is up to. I'm hoping since they are calling it mini, they will come back around. I missed that last one, Korky, due to a newborn type thing going on, but this time if the Seattle area is all they hit, I am driving up anyway!

Hope that wasn't some kind of 'Splice' deal Lunesse - I've heard they bring new meaning to the expression 'terrible twos'.

I forgot to add my support for 'Someone Else Not Me', Micistm, I really love that track too. I pre-ordered 'All You Need Is Now (Deluxo!), surprising myself in the process. There are just too many good tracks to pass it up. Does this mean I have to shave off my pubic hair now? Guidance please.

Just got the new album (In five days, top notch and thank you Amazon UK), and on first spin I am really liking it. I know what people mean now about back to their sound-It's like their early stuff but with wise old heads creating it. I can see me playing this quite a bit, it's an album of quality IMO.
