I really like the Big Thing album, and I'm not too fussed about Rio. Am I a DD heretic?

That's all good; Rio isn't me fave either. And I know a lot of fans don't overly like Seven and the Ragged Tiger which I think is great. Music subjective, it'd be boring musical world if it wasn't!
I don't know what my fave DD album is tbh...more songs off this n that rather than full albums for me. But they have some outstanding songs...I have stunned many a "DD-Disser" in the past by putting certain songs on!
...And I like the album Big Thing

Wow! I thought I was the only one in the Universe to like Big Thing, so many dissenters on the album, even Duran themselves, it's wierd.

If you arent really sure which album you like, grab the "Greatest" album, lots of their top stuff there for sure

Yeah, their greatest album certainly lives up to it (unlike bands today who put out a GH after a couple of albums then have to fill it with remixes... )
The tragic thing with the GH album, and I guess it applies to every band not just DD, is so much terrific stuff that went under the radar gets missed. Those brilliant album tracks that really deserve to be heard. Our Dolby's various compilations and best ofs are an example too! So much good stuff you need the original albums for... :)

I would consider Land to be one of my favourite songs, not just. I like the sparcity of much of the production on the album.

I was just going to say..... without "Big Thing" there'd be no "Land," and no "Palomino."

The release of Big Thing was when my parents decided I was old enough to go see them in NYC, so my first concert was a mini club tour supporting that...so it has a lot of sentimental value for me, as well. "Too Late Marlene" really is a nice one, too.

I think Land would have to be a contender for my favourite Duran Druan song.

Right, THAT's how you know Britgeekgrrl on LJ! ;-) (And I promise I'm not stalking you....)

I've been a fan since Seven and the Ragged Tiger was originally released, and I think All You Need Is Now is a phenomenal album. (You and I disagree on RCM, but I'm a big Justin Timberlake fan, so seeing the two working together really tickled me.) And as I mentioned more than once on the Floating City boards, "The Man Who Stole A Leopard" snuck into my brain when I wasn't looking and COMPLETELY TOOK OVER.

After Simon's vocal issues this summer, I really hope the tour dates this fall work out well. (Sadly, the local show is WELL out of my budget, so even assuming they don't have to cancel any more of the shows, I won't make it.)

...I wonder how many posts it's going to take until I remember not to change the color of my text here?

Actually been listening to RCM a bit on the ipod...and it's not as bad as many suggest, again like most DD albums theres quite a gems on it even if you don't like the album as a whole.
Most reviews seem to suggest it sounds 'Too much Timberland, not enough DD.' I kind of know what's meant there, although a little harsh and generalistic IMO

I have to say that while I am not a rabid DD fan by any means, I've always thought they were great musicians. Now, I am NOT comparing the band to the Beach Boys, but...well...okay, I am. Their ability was never in question with my, just that for a long time they applied it in very commercial ways. And even that stuff was really enjoyable. I saw them a few years ago on the Astronaut tour, and they were really great. They came out wearing black suits, white dress shirts, and overall their presentation was minimal . They let the music do the talking, and I loved it.

I did pick up their 3-CD set, Singles: 1981-1985.

Some great tracks, extended versions & live cuts.

I have a Duran Duran tattoo. I think we all know what my opinion on them is. XD

When the Astronaut album came out, I became super obsessed and remained that way for a couple years. Then I got pretty burnt out and stopped listening to them... and now I'm listening to them a bunch again.
I have their latest album, and I'm actually really impressed with it. They managed to pay homage to their classic sound and sound modern at the same time. Girl Panic and The Man Who Stole a Leopard are probably my favorites, along with Too Bad You're So Beautiful.

My wife's somewhat younger than me, and I introduced her to DD...and there were certain songs in the past (like Ordinary World, Come Undone to name just two) which she loved but had no idea who it was.

Now, she's an utter DD fan, way more than me! And has gone back, got all the albums, single box sets etc. Which was fine by me, I enjoy them as well! :)

She still curses me for selling all my 12" singles years ago when I was a broke student. TBH I regret that too

Anyway, been listening to them quite a bit lately and really enjoying them again.

DD was a band I didn't appreciate when I was a kid and they were everywhere, but the older I got, the more I looked at their output and overall musicianship, and I started liking them a lot more. "Hungry Like the Wolf" is one of the first songs I think of when someone asks me "What's a quintessential 80s song?"

I too have to admit that I am a DD fan (...ish!)! They came up in conversation at work the other night and I am still amazed at how much they polarize people; it really is a case of Yeah or Yuch! I really loved the first album, not so much as style or fashion (poster boy New Romantics...) but the sound just blew me away. "Friends of mine" and "Careless memories" are favourites to this day. Rio gave us "Hungry like the wolf", the demo for the JP-8 arpeggiator! I sort of went off them when they became the giant "stadium" group, but I do think their sound and production is unique.

This is a good collection and worth having as a measure of a bands evolution...

Big Thing is a great album.
Another album you don't hear much about is Pop Trash. That entire album is what I imagine a mellow acid trip to be like. I really like it.
I'm not sure how many other people agree with me, but I'm really used to having my favorite album by an artist be the one album that not many other superfans actually like that much. With Def Leppard, it's "Slang". With Queen, it's "Hot Space". And even with Thomas here, I haven't met very many people that like Gate to the Mind's Eye very much.

Anyway, back to DD. XD

Slightly off topic, Love the Minds Eye CD/DVD! Often have it on while painting or sketching.

With Pop trash, we found it by accident one day when on holiday...I'd never heard of it. I even thought it may be a different band (until I saw their photos on the back).
So anyway, bought it...and proceeded to play in the car over and over for the rest of the trip. I like it, as you say, mellow chill out album- And Someone else not me is just stunning, one of my favourite tracks. How that was not made a huge hit is beyond me... :)

If there are any TD fans out there who don't have Minds Eye - you must. As synthy as anything he has ever done and the usual wonderful mixture of musical styles.

If you need further convincing, the music played on the trailer for the Floating City game is a short excerpt from Minds Eye.

Back to DD (and this should make Lunesse green with envy) an old friend of mine is an osteopath who lives in West London. She had for a while as one of her clients a certain Mr.LeBon and so got her hands all over him from time to time

Someone else not me is a beautiful song. I also particularly like "The Sun Doesn't Shine Forever".

Never a big fan but the latest album is brilliant, a real favourite. There is no doubt in my mind that their rhythm section is one of the best going around even after all these years.

Incidently they are coming to Australia in 2012, maybe we might see Mr Dolby do something similar ;)

*bump*

Just bought tickets to see them at the Mountain Winery in August; now to see if lightning will strike twice for me this year re: my musical obsessions. Getting to hear "The Man Who Stole A Leopard" live, after "Evil Twin Brother" at the Red Devil Lounge this month, may well render me catatonic with joy.

I was a Duran Duran fan from the first single. What a long strange trip they've had! I was on and off with this band many times over the years. Just when you think they can't go any lower, they'll pull a great album out of thin air, only to scrape even lower the next time out. Needless to say, my feelings are complex. If you want to read 10,000 words on the topic, try this six part ROCK G.P.A.® series from my blog in 2010:

Just watched the VH1 behind the music Docu, the extended one with the All you need is now added bit.
I think their Phoenix like rise from the ashes several times is testament to their class and do deserve credit as a really good pop act.
