Is this a legitimate release?

Got some Thomas Dolby stuff to sell? Looking to see if another fan has that old 45 you've been hunting down? This section is for connecting folks and their Dolby memorabilia. No file sharing/downloading/mp3 linking, please. TD-centric stuff only.

Is this a legitimate release?

I'm guessing not but who knows? Its up to 50 bucks on e-Bay!!! Methinks Tom should do one of those 'cease & desist' letters like he did to K-Fed if its a bootleg!!!

Almost certainly not - the source music comes from too many different areas (Low Noise and Lene Lovich??), the use of an old EMI/Parlophone picture,
no company identifier on the cover , the serial number screams bootleg. I've seen the same item a month ago but I still think it's fake.

It's not a legit release as the seller is making copies that he sells once in a while ('cause there are plenty who would by it for what it has on it). I (shamefully) bought a copy last year as the disc has some tunes that I have NEVER been able to find anywhere else. That's the ONLY reason I felt somewhat ok about buying it, since I felt I couldn't get access to some of these tunes any other way... I certainly wouldn't pay $50 for it!

Thanks. I thought it was too good to be true. :( The guy's been selling them one after the other for at least a month on eBay. I have Pedestrian Walkway on vinyl from when I bought it new and guard it with my life... unless my wife threw it out when she cleaned up the basement a few months back....argghhhh!!!!

It is illegal, but I also bought a copy a long time ago before I realized that was the case. The sound quality isn't the greatest, and it certainly isn't worth $50+.

Bidding has ended...

Postby mizmusic » Sun Jan 14, 2007 8:44 pm

OUCH! The winning bid was $57 U.S.!!!

Hmmmm, has anyone ever heard {or heard OF} this "Technology" track??!?

No matter, it's just some guy bootlegging. Taking advantage of the musically-starved. It's a strange situation when buying
bootlegs would be the only way most of us would get to hear most of those tracks. :?

Sigh...if only we could buy an official release with these rare tracks on it, but I guess there isn't much of a chance of
that. Try NO chance--I guess bidding on OOP, used vinyl on eBay is the best any of us are going to be able to do to get to
legally hear most of these tracks.

Don't mind me, I'm kind of wistfully philosophical tonight.

Peace and strange song-names,

Kara
What is the sound of one hand clapping? A very soft
whoosh, as far as I'm concerned. Air displacement, you know.

Good luck to him. If it's the only way to get difficult to release tracks then it thats the way it must be. I would rather only give the bootlegger 10 bucks but it's amazing what some people will pay. In a way it's taking advantage of a very limited appeal music - it's not as if anyone else will be bothered to bootleg the bootleg. It's not really the internet to blame, it just makes it more apparent - I bought my fair share of Numan, Dolby, Lovich bootlegs in the 80s - it's part of record collecting.

You can find virtually everything at Yesterday and Today Records. They used to be a brick and mortar store just up the road from me. The guy who ran it (and continues to run the online presence) is one of the most musically knowledgeable people I've ever encountered in my life. He had copies of, quite literally, everything Dolby has done/produced/played back-up on/you name it, all labeled as such in his TD section. I remembered he always had copies of the Jack Heard "Sex Machine" there. Go here: http://www.yesterdayandtodayrecords.com and type in Jack Heard in the search box. You can have "Sex Machine" for 11 bucks.

He also has the Fallout Club vinyl, too.

Enjoy.

Would it really be appropriate to post a photo of a seven-inch sex machine to this board? I mean, there may be children present!

;)

Sorry. Could not resist.

You can find "Sex Machine" and another Jack Heard song, "Burnin' Love" on the compilation "Squares Blot Out the Sun". It's pretty easy to find online on vinyl or CD.
