Flat Earth Society member's collaborative TD cover project..

Postby MarkM13 » Sat Feb 14, 2009 8:00 pm

Greetings,

For those of you interested, there is a collaborative cover in it's initial stages.
"Flat Earth" members 'Heretic", MarkM13,and Mr. Pab are working on a version of "Urban Tribal"
You can follow it's progress via this thread.

The genesis of the project can be found under the thread "Another Cover of Airwaves"
located here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2947&p=39678#p39678

Stay tuned for more info ;)

this'll be fun ...
Andrew, might i suggest a midi-generated click track, that could be the 'master' for all the other tracks? That would eliminate any frame-rate problems, and keep us all together on the tempo changes?
I'm adequate for background vox, but Darren sounded really good on your video, if he would care to contribute that would be great!

Greetings Gents,

I'm wondering about the practicality of sending large audio files over the net.
If the both of you are interested I could set up the FTP section of my site.
I've never had a need to use it, but I've been studying up on how to set it up
and it seems pretty straight forward. You would need to download/install a free
FTP ap. if you don't have one. I could point you towards a couple of free versions if needed.

Once set up and configured you could upload files to a page on my site, where they would be available for others to download.

Or, we could send files compressed as .mp3 and live with the lower audio quality.

Thoughts,
M

yousendit is free for anything up to a gigabyte, i think, but we might easily exceed that limit. I'd rather not deal with lower sound quality, so if your FTP site doesn't cost you anything extra, that sounds like a great way to go. I use it for work all the time, and we use either 'stuffit' or 'zip' to compress a folder containing the files, never had any problem with that system.
i've been driving my wife crazy with repeated listenings to the original, and i was thinking, what do you guys think about adding a double-time rhythmic feel, either as an interlude between the 2nd and 3rd verses, and/or as an undercurrent throughout the song that could maybe sort of come up to the surface occasionally?
if you like the interlude concept, i was thinking of playing off the title of the song by doing some kind of techno "urban" take on a sort of "tribal" primitive groove, like maybe with a lot of layers of percussion, maybe contrapuntal guitar parts like an African rhumba? Anything there??

edit: here's a cool groove from TPOK Jazz, not to copy, but just to maybe inspire something. It shifts into second gear about 6:00.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gb0cyHj2 ... re=related

2nd edit: sorry, i meant that the interlude might go after the 2nd verse, before the 2nd chorus, after the lyric "and their eyes seldom meet" - or sumfin' or nuttin'!

I like the african idea and investigating some double-time sections opening up during the track.

If the ftp idea is a goer then I'm up for that.

Cheers,
Andrew

I'll work on getting the FTP set up this PM.

I'll PM you with your passwords.

Pabs, You're reading my mind with the double time feel.
Much of the drumset work I do is in Samba and Soca styles.
In addition to the typical Latin styles, Mambo, Afro Cuban 6/8 etc.
I've got a remix up at Realworld composed
in this style.
You can check it out here.
http://www.realworldremixed.com/remix.p ... N10sO5ErAK" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Like Pab"s referance, it may bring spark some ideas.
It contains many Latin cliche's in the piano and bass parts.

Watch your in box for the FTP set up info.
Please bear with me as it's the first time I'm setting it up.

update from 'the collaborators': we're still working on it, right now i've got a version that sounds like Jimmy Buffett, Mark's sounds like McCoy Tyner, and Heretic's staying strong and faithful :D - more news as it develops!

i was trying to find some background on Urban Tribal, anyone out there feel like sharing? - i'd always heard it was 'a Joni Mitchell song', but no mention of it appears on Joni's websites, have i got that wrong? It seems to me if Joni had written the lyrics, the girl would be going "back to Harlem" instead of "back to Harlesden"!

Also, anyone's thoughts on the 'meaning' of the lyrics in general would be greatly appreciated.

The Joni Mitchell version is called "The Jungle Line" found on the album "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" (An awsome album it is too, the cover art is actually painted by her).

i'm familiar with "Summer Lawns", yes it is a great album, but are you sure that "Jungle Line" is the song you mean? I don't have it with me to check, but to my memory there's no similarity of lyrics, melody or chord structure - maybe there's another song on that album you're thinking of?
- but thanks for the idea, i'll research it a little!

You are correct Mr.Pab, I mentally confused you mentioning Joni with the fact that Thomas did do a version of Jungle Line on the Live Wireless Concert. Urban Tribal is a separate entity alltogether with no connection to Joni that I know of....sorry to be so confusing, I shall endevor to post when my mind is actually working...errr....well if I wait till then I may never post...LOL

The confusion between Urban Tribal and The Jungle Line likely stems from the fact that both appeared on the "Low Single" that Thomas released circa 1980. Of course, both songs made it onto "Live Wireless", but have not been re-released since then (though hopefully soon!)

Finally, something to share with the forum!
This cover of "Urban Tribal" is a collaboration between Mark M13 and Mr. Pab, with valuable contributions in the planning stages by Heretic. We had hoped for a vocal track by Darren of Pirate Twins fame, but of course their upcoming fandango has taken up all the available time of The Twins. We also were blessed with great help from my pal Dan Hovey on guitar.
Personally, I'm still eager for any further contributions or remixes from forum members, just send a PM and we can make individual tracks available for downloading.
Please enjoy!

well thank you Korkala!
liner notes:
the SFX at the beginning are the St. Stephen's cathedral bell in Vienna on Easter morning, and an Italian ambulance outside the Vatican city. (recorded by me).
This beast actually contains more than 60 tracks!
It should have faded out after the vocal finishes, but I always like the stuff that happens after a song is supposed to fade out.
Recorded on Digital Performer, GarageBand and ProTools.
And now I will shut up.
