Lesley-

I hired a web designer here in Austin and worked in tandem with him on the look of the site. I'm not a programming guru of any sort, so I needed someone who could take my conceptual ideas and realize them in code.

Thanks for checking it out!

Hi everyone, I just introduced myself in the new members board last night. My name is Rich and I live with my wife and two sons in Phoenixville, Pennsyvania.

Professionally, I am the news editor of a magazine for a nonprofit organization, but I do quite a bit of writing on my own. Most of this winds up on my blog, which is called "The Dichotomy of the Dog" and can be found at:

http://marimbadog.livejournal.com

I write a bit about pop culture and a lot about music, along with travel, family stuff, etc. I've been posting a photo a day [almost] everyday since my birthday last June, and a few months ago I began a series of blog posts called "The Decade Project," in which I'm chronologically reposting my favorite blog posts from the last 10 years.

Back in the fall of last year, I also started making a series of short videos called "Cheap Red Wine" in which I have a sip or two of the eponymous drink and talk about something. Topics have included everything from the night Juice Newton waved at me from the stage to the correspondence of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.

One of my recent CRWs was about Tom Jones and was discovered by the moderator of the largest Tom Jones fansite in the world, Tom Jones International. She posted my video there so I had about seven minutes of semi-fame from that, which was kind of cool. The CRWs are posted on my blog as well.

Anyway, thanks for reading and feel free to check out my blog if you like.

Hi Rich. What a truly awesome blog. I thoroughly enjoyed your entry about how R.E.M.'s career and your life have interwoven. You really have the gift of communicating through writing. I saw R.E.M. on the 'Green' Tour in '89 (but don't have any accompanying story to that event, other than it was a great concert).

Has there ever been any great relationship that hasn't started with Elvis Costello and Sesame Street?!

I love the 'Cheap Red Wine' idea too, I just don't usually think to record my thoughts for posterity!

Glad you could join us Rich, I'll be checking out you blog in the future. :D

Here's another 'Green' era memory.

R.E.M. performed their song 'Orange Crush' on the U.K. show 'Top Of The Pops'. The song is about agent orange, the chemical used heavily against the Viet Cong in the Vietnam war. I'll never forget the Radio 1 DJ presenting the show (possibly Gary Davies) saying, with that mandatory enthusiasm they had to have, "That was R.E.M. with 'Orange Crush' - what a great song for the summertime!"

DOH!

Dooley, thanks for checking out my blog! I'm glad you like it. I'm having fun with it these days.

I think a part three of the R.E.M. epic will be in the works soon. I now need to cover the '00s.

Also, what you said about "Orange Crush" doesn't surprise me. I think that's one of their more misunderstood songs, along with "The One I Love."

Of my many (many!) talents, the one most germane to THIS forum would be the little bit of amateur metal turning. I say this because I reproduce an Achilles heel part for the Steinberger Bass:

Image

The recangular part was originally cast aluminum and tended to strip out the screw (which is actually backwards in this pic...The replacement part is steel and quite a bit more stout. It's also lead impregnated, reducing it's tendency to gall. I can't take credit for that bit of aerospace, it's just a feature of the steel alloy used.

So I ain't got no CNC, and I don't make no model turbine engines, but very certain things can be made, and easily.

Details are chronicled here:

I like to write, but that probably wouldn't help anyone, however I am a self styled bootlegger on the side! If anyone is interested come by the old Johnson shack after dark, and be sure you aren't followed. So far I can only make moonshine, and lemon moonshine, but i am currently working on a new flavor: Mango Moonshine.

Dad was working for a company in Georgia many years ago and the guys in the back of the shop were shootin' the breeze one Friday afternoon. Out comes the Ball Preserves jar with a clear liquid, and they offer him some. When asked what it was, they replied 'Moonshine'.

Based on his fear of the unknown, he declined, saying it was probably too rough for his tastes.

'Well then, sounds like you oughta try the Cherry Mash, instead!' and out comes another Preserve jar, this time with a red colored liquid.

Dad took a swig and coughed and sputtered as it burned all the way down.

'What the hell's in that?', he said.

'Oh, that's Moonshine with a little food coloring innit!'

I'm trying to start up my own business. Possibly not the best thing to do in this economy, but I'm not quitting my regular job.

If there is anyone on the forum that would like to have items powder coated, let me know. I can't cover shipping, (I'm in Washington state, U.S.) but for Dolby fans I can coat any item up to about 18" square for the cost of the powder and return shipping. It ends up being about $8 to $16 per 1/2 pound (depending on the desired color.) That is enough to coat quite a bit. I only used about an ounce to coat a set of bicycle handlebars and the handlebar stem.

I prefer Hotcoat powders. The Eastwood company carries them here -> http://www.eastwood.com/hotcoat-powder- ... wders.html

Car parts, paintball gun parts, bicycle parts, just about anything that you would use paint on. The powder coating is more efficient, better for the environment, and more durable.

I can coat any item that is electrically conductive and able to take 375* F without melting.

If anyone wants to take me up on this, my email is cainam@earthlink.net.

Hi everyone
in my spare time (when I'm not wasting it playing retro games on the old arcade machine), I like to draw n paint. I want to get more into surreal stuff, with a Horror/Sci fi angle, but for now most of the stuff online atm is local landscape.

My web page is at www.nzartguild.co.nz/mikeroberts
Hope you like, whoever looks! I do intend so sell some, just quietly in my spare time. But have to make certain I do everything right, as Mr Taxman scares me somewhat!

Hi all-

Love Thomas Dolby. I'm a fan since I was 15 and I had a paper route that let me go places on a bike with some money to spend. I bought The Golden Age of Wireless on tape which was great listening on a walkman while delivering papers. That was a long time ago in upstate NY. These days I live in san francisco and make animation:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJIAdO_AegM

It is quite close to San Mateo which I gather is Thomas' base. I'd love to see him play some time, or even talk music video stuff, if such a person is accessible. I have worked on some MTV music videos and I'm currently about to start a contract helping make 10 for the disney channel. Anyone know if there's a way to show him my demo? ^

This site looks great and I'm happy to see his stuff out there and people actively participating. The free downloads are a generous and smart bonus, too.

Hiya,
My regular work is as a development worker with vulnerable kids, based in Cambodia.
But have also had a number of exhibitions in Portraiture in oils. As a confirmed computer abuser rather than user, have no blog, no my space, best i can do is use one of my paintings as my avator,

Hello all from currently cold & wet South Australia!
I'm Dean & like many here, I've been a Dolby fan since GAOW - captivated by both his musicality & his outstanding production.
By day I lecture & coordinate courses in Sound Production (personally specialising in Pro Tools) for our state government vocational edu & training organisation (TAFE SA).
Outside of that, I'm an active musician, father of 2 teenage girls (ain't that a challenge! ) & really enjoy sound design & noise art. I've recently had a couple of weeks off work & took the opportunity to immerse myself in AMOTFC which inspired me to create this: http://soundcloud.com/eysavit-1/missing-soundscape
Cheers!

I forgot to mention, since coming home from Germany, my radio show has started up again (actually, it's not only my show any more, my best friend co-hosts). It's called "Some Shows Are Better Than Others" and is on Sundays 9-10 PM UK time on University Radio Falmer. http://www.urfonline.com/listen to hear the show. We pick all the music ourselves (yes, on the weeks when it's my choice TMDR does usually feature) and we also like audience contribution.

I am the technical lead for the flight computer on a high profile space vehicle program. My background is in software engineering.

I have a home music studio centered around a keyboard setup, and my current passion (in addition to listening to music) is buying and programming software synthesizers to use in my studio projects. I do this for my own enjoyment, and have never performed in public. I am self-taught on the piano, and my pet project is a dynamic sampled representation that I cobbled together of a Concert Steinway. I am a purist and will never think that a computer can replace the original, but it sure sounds pretty good, and I can crank it as loud as I want without waking the household. When I retire from my day job, I plan to set up a mobile recording studio to promote local musical talent.

Another hobby, I currently have 3 iPhone Apps in the iTunes store, related mostly to another passion of mine which is sailboat racing. I have a countdown timer, a true wind calculator, and a tactical racing compass.

My app company, H4 Software, http://www.h4sw.com is named after the Harrison H4 marine chronograph timepiece that should have won him the Longitude prize in 1777 -as chronicled in the book: The Story of Longitude- and required King George to intervene in Parliament on his behalf to get his award. A fascinating true-life story of greed, jealousy, triumph over evil and historical significance.
