New Forum Look

Postby Lunesse » Wed Dec 15, 2010 10:35 pm

It was time.

Anyway. This move helped move the forum into the present, I'm hoping it helps stop spam, we played with several versions (those of you around tonight must think you are drugs and the world keeps changing.) ;)

There will be more changes in the next week, and I apologize in advance if I totally bork things temporarily. I'm making lots of backups. =)

A few mods will return this week also, that left when I heavily changed the layout. But chat is still here, the other ones are fairly minor and will be attended to...

I feel weird not looking at black backgrounds....
I feel weird not looking at black backgrounds....
jus' weird ?
well ... @ 1st i thought that the forum was hacked , before i saw this topic !
why does it has to be this bright white background ... & WHY was the look changed @ all ?
has anybody complained about the ol' look ?
i haven't seen any complaints , so WHY change it now ?
if @ all , it should get a color scheme like the new "oceanea" ep , but not this god awful grey top & bright white rest of the site !
seriously ... i actually LOATHE the new look - it's as awful as it can get !
did u catch the myspace bug & felt the overwhelming urge to change everything that was good or @ least okay , lunesse ?
honestly ... if the "design" & look of the forum will stay that way , u won't see me around here much anymore ... if @ all , sorry !
i sincerely hope that we'll @ least get an option to change the color scheme !
i also very much dislike several other changes - like the avatars on the right now instead of on the left like before !
anyway ... this new look highly irritates me & i feel uncomfortable looking @ it !
please change it back to a darker background , as my eyes already hurt now after jus' looking @ it for a few minutes - seriously !
bye !

I can't stand it. I always enjoyed coming to the forum because it's dark background was kind of soothing compared to everything else on the web. It was so cozy, now I feel like I'm in a an operating room. Too bad it had to change.

It is a bit bright... but otherwise it seems like some smoother interface options. Looking forward to your further tinkerings!

I can work on finding one that suits our needs that is not as bright. I tried one and it was so NARROW. I will switch to it, but chat will be gone for the day.

See if it is more soothing. There are several darker choices but I found them to be TOO Dark in light of the Oceanea look to everything else on the site.... but I am certainly open to community input. It IS a community after all. However, it is not instantaneous to find a solution that fits all our needs.

As I said, (n)l, a lot has changed you cannot see, beyond the color scheme. Thanks for being so friendly and conversational with your opinion. Because, you know, I just throw crap together on a whim around here.

Lunesse--

It's fine. It's easy to read and gets information from Point A to Point B.

Change is hard for some people. Maybe if you just included a few more apostrophes...

I like the blue on the sides... nice! And the slight color differentiation between successive posts works well, too. Thanks for continuing to make improvements! This place wouldn't be as great as it is without all the work you do in the background.

The new look is so odd for some reason. It feels sort of sterile, and halogen lit. It will take a bit of getting used to. If it cuts down on spam and has some cool new features though, then I'm sure I can learn to live with it. Just pray that my submerged memories of being born in a top secret government lab don't surface or we could all be in great peril.

The only problem I have is that it isn't as immediately obvious which threads have new posts as before.

In the couple of hours since I first looked at the new format it has already been improved. Nice blues here and there, avatars back on the left of our posts.

Another thing that is slightly off putting are the moving icons next to some of the topics on the 'view active topics' page. What does that mean and do they have to move? Can we also have a 'view active topics' link at the top of each page again?

Thanks for listening Lunesse, I know it's tough balancing site security and our delicate sensibilities. You can tell by my beautiful, natural hair that I really do care about how things look.

I'm not against staying dark....but we will not move backwards to what we had. I am looking, it will take time. I agree it is not as "homey," but I gotta sleep sometime =) I know I won't please everyone, I thank you for your patience, and I know what is "missing" so far, believe me.

Love the return to a dark background. Thanks for all your efforts on our behalf.

Good, Dooley. Keeping our "warm" home here is very important. I absolutely agree. It IS different than most places on the web in that way and I don't want to lose that.

I also like black backround. Without sounding too critical, I don't understand these narrow webpages. What's the point having a page which just use 50% of the width of the display? That was for some reason a big thing few years back but fortunately not that much anymore.

Anyhow.. I'm glad that the Flat Earth Society forum is alive and well.

Dear all,
some of you are obviously luxuriating with huge screens. This covers about 80% width of my screen and that just fine by me.

With the myriad of different HW resolutions available today it is a practical impossibility to make a solution that everyone is going to be 100% happy with.

Remember folks: There are other reasons for upgrading the FES than just changing the colour-scheme. I never personally liked black/red much anyway and find the current teal, grey white combination soothing and clean-looking.

In the last 24 hours I have deleted precisely ZERO spam and banned precisely ZERO spammers. That is a huge relief!

Cheers,
Jon

Amen, Jon! I haven't had the "pleasure" of reading Russian-language spam inviting me to "get to know the prostitutes of the Oktyabrskiy neighborhood of Moscow" or to view the "Kendra sex tape" or "buy authentic (fake) Nike" crap since Lunesse modified the forum. It's a beautiful thing!

I know change is challenging for some, but it's inevitable, often necessary, and we humans are pretty adaptable creatures. Even if we gripe - politely - at first.

(to be intoned in the best, gravelly, Marine Corps voice of Clint Eastwood):
"Improvise. Adapt. Overcome."

Semper fi, Flat Earthers!

I'm totally digging it! I actually think I like the color scheme better! though there are these odd gray bars on the sides and I don't know what they are. Are those supposed to be there? Is chat still in the cards?

The bars are what keep the hackers and spammers out, jeez Mondo, get with it! They also keep all the fun we have here in the forum from reaching people who just can't handle that much excitement. The last thing we need is a Dolbileaks scandal.

Yep it's ok! Just trying out a reply here. Mmm, black on white when composing (ok). I'm glad it's still white on a dark background on the main boards as it's easy on the eyes.

I always thought the red and black a little harsh so I quite like the new colours.

Chat IS here, I know it isn't up top. That is a graphical interface bar so I have to make one. You will find a link to it down where the "who's online" has been reinstalled, right above it. Not the best, I know, but so it goes for the moment....

A bit shocking but overall not too bad. My biggest beef is Lunesse's name being in Red which on this blue really hurts my eyes. Otherwise, pertty nicely done.

Love the new design! I am liking the new line under forum title, "Lincoln Steaming in the Chilly Air of the Morning," or maybe I am being stupid and never noticed it...lol. Either way, I like the new design a lot along with the button looks.

What can I say? Does the job. And I like not having the banner at the top that was there previously, made it look like we were discussing a Kraftwerk ex-robot. I don't know if that's what Thomas aims to be or not. I'm guessing not.

well ... the subject line of this thread is "new forum LOOK" , so i was obviously talking about THAT & not about technical improvements to get rid of the bloody spammers , which is of course a good thing , dear lunesse !

anyway ... please read my reply in the other thread ( viewtopic.php?p=55504#p55504 ) to see , what is still NOT looking good or working properly here - thanx !

p. s. : about the question of change in general , my maxim is "only change something , if u really can improve it , which is ALWAYS subject to a positive feedback by others !"
i really wouldn't mind , if that would also be the case here now ...
