The Floating City - Let the Game Begin!

Postby Lunesse » Wed Jun 22, 2011 8:45 am

It’s finally here! Today Thomas is launching his new transmedia game The Floating City. Based on a crazy idea he has been nurturing since he began his album nearly two years ago, it is the fruit of several months’ hard work by a dedicated all-star team of developers and writers, and it’s the prelude to my album A Map of the Floating City which will follow as the game reaches its climax.

The Floating City is open for registration from today at http://www.floatingcity.com. Gameplay commences on June 22nd at 5pm GMT. Players from around the world will form tribes and collaborate to earn free music downloads, merchandise and concert tickets. The leading tribe will even win the right to stage a private concert at which his band and Thomas will perform the forthcoming album in its entirety.

LET THE GAME BEGIN!

*edit* You guys are great. We are working to boost power to the game, so many of you want in to play!

I think it just heaved up a lung and died. I don't even get a normal login page anymore just a popup for "DEV LOGIN"

some changes are going through the internet. Empty your cache in your browser to be sure it is getting the most recent DNS info.

I tried for 8 hours to get in from California; DNS hasn't resolved yet.

So, I decided to get more aggro and changed the DNS settings on my local machine's network adapter to point to an openDNS UK server. And voila, I'm in. (Please do not ask me for technical advice for how to do it.) But one thing bugs me: I got thrown into the Clubland Tribe whether I wanted to be in it or not, while there's another tribe called Mulu.

If anyone knows a way around this, let me know. I just got off work and it will take me awhile to learn the ropes.

"We're back! Interest was so high that our server couldn't handle the volume, so we wound up doing a last-minute migration and of course it's introduced a few new bugs that we're scrambling to work out ASAP. But it's safe to go back in the water!"

Mulu, your tribe is based on geography. There's a small bug being fixed that deals with tribe, but choosing a tribe is not an option, it is based on where you live in the real world. =)

Thanks Luna, I think I understand now - I'm suddenly a member of 17 Hills. Not as busy as Clubland perhaps, but definitely more elegiac; but now my vessel name is a bit inappropriate. Oh well, back in the water I go. 8)

I tihnk those niggling details will be taken care of, the whole game move to a new server, which caused a few new issues, which are being taken care of, etc. Quite a feat for one single day, really. Things are very stable now. Come in and play everyone!

It really is pretty awesome, knowing the level of programming to be done (to use an old phrase). All is now well as mentioned. I think I blew up the crossword though, lol.

If it's based on the real-world geography then there is a bug since I am in the south east of England in a tribe mostly populated by people from USA.

Not clear what you mean by "your tribe is based on geography" then.

I knew the weekend would be a bit quiet, there was good weather outside and something called Glastonbury on every channel that Wimbledon was not already on.
Trading has been brisk since the 'penny dropped' on how to create the 'five item' lists... you can get thru 10 trades very quickly.
Its fun so far, i do wish there was 'a little more' to explore, read and listen to, but that is no complaint, it just shows how much time I spend on there.
Anyhoo, great game, hope everyone has got the hang of it and enjoying it as much as I am :D

Haven't had a look yet as only got the computer back on (another aftershock in Christchurch couple of weeks ago and it took a tumble), and only had the briefest of looks.
Fascinating concept from what I've seen, just by the description to reminds me of the old '80s space trading game 'Elite', but I'll need a better look.
Probably won't join unless it really grabs me due to limited time atm, but I love games and this looks interesting so will certainly be watching it. And If I get hooked and have to get involved so be it... :)
I love the maps/artwork of what I've seen, beautiful work

Woo, I just got to hear the rough mix of "Evil Twin Brother" in the game. Who else has heard it? What do you think?

Generally dig the groove, though the Michael Jackson-esque back-up singer grates a bit. I hope the refining of the mix will... refine it. I'm really quite taken with the "Spice Train" track (hidden after Marseilles on one of the Sortie runs), though I hope it will be further worked a bit, too.
