Amazing! I did not know that. So places like Seattle or Portland must be pretty much homeless free. And New Orleans too since Katrina.

So, Mondo, if I invite a homeless person in, so they can take a hot shower, are they likely to gum up my plumbing?

You know, I was afraid that this conversation was going to become insensitive and cruel - thank goodness that hasn't happened.

On a trip to the pub with some comrades, we were privileged to spy an old lady who was rather fond of dancing. She was drunk as a lord and had a pot-fug around her. When the bouncers finally attempted to eject her, she led them on a merry chase through the pub that lasted a good five minutes.

I hope I ma that spry when I am her age...

Pot-fug?

I'm guessing pot as in marijuana and fug as in cloud. But I could be wrong!

no, "pot-fug" had us Yanks wondering as well, it's not a phrase one runs into often.

I'll have a tiny glass of elderflower cordial this afternoon, I've got a cold and it's the perfect tonic.

I never knew there was a difference, but at times, there's definitely something lost in translation... :?

Yes indeed. And some of the differences are quite astounding. I was asked if I was pissed while visiting England a few weeks ago. An American would have thought he/she asked if I was mad, or even if I had wet my pants!

Fag and faggot are good ones, over here the former is a cigarette and the latter is a type of meatball. I like to chew on a nice warm faggot :D

while it's a compliment for an American to be called spunky, I don't think it would be much appreciated across the pond!

This just reminded me of a business trip to the US in 2007. During a meeting, one of my colleagues who had travelled over with me excused himself by saying he was "going outside to smoke a few fags". This resulted in our guests horror, quickly emphasizing the company's inclusion policy and condemning any form of violence. He then sheepishly had to explain he just needed a cigarette.......
