Postby Lunesse » Mon Oct 02, 2006 7:50 am

This info is current as of November 15, 2011:

I know you guys are having great fun at the shows. I am going to have to ask, however, that you not post video on youtube. Definitely do not then link to it within Thomas' online communities. We can't stop you from taking video, or uploading it somewhere. But we can remove it from here and other official Dolby online locations. That is something within our control, and if you post boot video within the confines of his online presence, we will ask nicely, then get more serious. ;)
Fans of TMDR know that he is very much against illegal distribution of music and video, and that falls into his own work as well. He is very careful of the quality of his work, and what gets released in terms of sound quality, and it is distressing to see illegal video of recent shows on youtube and blogs, sometimes by members of this forum. I am asking that you not do this out of respect for Thomas and his wishes. It is not your material to share. If we find you, we will ask you to remove it. If you do not, we will go directly to your provider, or the website where the content is being shown and inform them that you are providing illegal content. Everyone can make an honest mistake the first time. ;)

Thanks!

I'll second that HollyG!

I don't like seeing the illegal videos up there, and it is distressing, you're right Lunesse...don't know why...

I don't know, Lynz, it's like those dudes who sneak camera phones into movie theaters and illegally tape the movie/show that they are watching. The performer doesn't get the royalties, and the video quality sucks big time!

Yeah! That's so true korky. Only the other day on YouTube I saw a 3 min video of the new Jackass 2 film, been out since 22nd September. Yep, the quality is totally awful...and totally daft.
Can folks get fined for doing this?

It's really hard to argue on the side of copyright and paying artists when "Jackass 2" is the subject...

Just a random thought. ;)

In any case, stealing Dolby is bad, mmkay?

Admittedly it is; Fred the Cat, but at the end of the day it's still a film and people have worked hard doing stupid things and causing mayhem that it causes fans of Jackass (like myself) to become angry because we want to wait and see it, not have it spoiled by people who are lucky enough to have seen it.

Rant over...

DOLBY COVER TUNE

Postby jayway » Wed Nov 15, 2006 3:37 pm

Hey Gang,
Just wondering what the general feeling is toward covering one of Thom's tunes. Not for profit. Not for public airing. Just for personal enjoyment and/or sharing with a friend. If that's cool I would like to share my creation. Just provide me your email and I'll send you a copy. If that's a problem with anyone I will not speak of it again.
Otherwise, glad to now be a member and hope all are having a good day.
Ciao,

Didn't Thomas say

Postby Guybrush » Thu Nov 16, 2006 10:55 am

that he enjoyed watching the videos on You Tube because he could see things he's forgotten about like old interviews? I thought it would help people become more familiar with Thomas Dolby than anything.

Guy: I think what Lunesse is saying (Lunesse: please correct me if I'm wrong) is that the video you take at his recent shows is not authorized material. The videos you take should be for your private use only. If you post an old video or interview, those were usually reviewed by professional editors and the artist and probably have that artist's seal of approval. I'm guessing that is what Thomas is talking about when he mentions he likes seeing his old interviews. The video you take at one of his shows has not been reviewed by him or any professional editors, and is considered bootleg footage. Since he is releasing the recent shows on DVD next week, I think he'd rather see people buying his DVD than downloading illegal bootlegs for free. Plus with his videos he has professional control of the output that viewers see. Just my two cents.

YouTube prob think thay are the law at this moment.

When I saw the "Wireless" postings I contacted Lunesse and she said they hadn't responded to other requests to remove material.

This position WILL change over time.

Any artist CANNOT overide the wishs of the copyright holder for their material.

They all probably wish they held the copyright to their own material but thats what they sacrifice to present their music through the record labels.

If you spent a year creating a record, would you want it freely available to all and sundry - if you were making all your living from it?

MiniCoopGuy's clarification makes sense.

I posted some of TMDR's old music videos on myMySpace. I got them from YouTube and they have MTV or VH1 logos on them.

Is that okay, Lunesse?

I'm kinda new to all this.

Hmm - I'm no lawyer. In the UK I consider that public sector broadcasts are OK to record for yourself and your friends. We pay for this material in our license fee. Over commercial networks I guess you're being a pirate if you record it at all.

In the case of old material I don't think anyone is gonna persue you, but you're a pirate unless you know you ain't! But watch it totally on new stuff.

Not sure if this qualifies, but...

Thomas Dolby in Atlanta - One of Our Submarines

Lousy quality, rude people, just a mess...and yes it's on YouTube.

Oh crud, it gets worse...

Thomas Dolby in Atlanta - Airhead
Thomas Dolby in Atlanta - Hyperactive
Thomas Dolby in Atlanta - Story About KFed
Thomas Dolby in Atlanta - Airwaves
Thomas Dolby in Atlanta - Windpower
Thomas Dolby in Atlanta - Budapest By Blimp
Thomas Dolby in Atlanta - Europa and the Pirate Twins
Thomas Dolby in Atlanta - I Live in a Suitcase

All from the same poster - name is "bbonet"

Running across more from the TSI tour at other stops - easy to find.
Take what man makes and use it,
But do not worship it,
For it shall pass.

One thing, maybe put a disclaimer on your site - this material for my use / friends only - something like that. In case someone unwelcome visits. At least you can say you publicised your policy on viewing this material. Determined hackers can get just about anywhere!

While I agree with lousy quality... I take a small bit of offence to the "rude people" comment. The ATL crowd loved Dolby, we'd love to have him back, and the crowd was genuinely crazy for him. Our group may have been boistrous at times, but never outright rude. Maybe playful, but I'm fairly certain none of it was intended to be mean spirited. We had a great time, and if his blog is any indication, so did Mr. Dolby.

But yeah, those clips are pretty crappy quality, and they don't do the show any justice at all. The ATL show was awesome, and those clips just don't convey that at all.

I'm not ashamed to admit, I would love to see Mr. Dolby's live rendition of "Hot Sauce" again... but I'd be more than happy to pay the proper source for that priveledge, or wait for the podcast.. whichever comes first. =)

I think the "rude people" comment stems from the amount of conversation to be heard on those bad clips... I assure you, the conversation level was NOT that loud at the venue & seems to be a product of the close field sensitivity of the mic used to record the audio...
The ATL fans had a big time & so did Mr.D... he told us so, both during & after the show...

I'm with you, Culo. The crumby audio didn't do the Atlanta crowd justice. We were definitely an enthusiastic crowd, but certainly not a rude one.

I remember only one guy that got on my nerves for being rude. He was drunk and kept yelling, "Play Windpower" before EVERY song. Oh... and the other drunk guy that came up to Spendy and I to ask what our favorite TD song was. Of course, my sister (Spendy) and I both launched into our dissertations about why each song is brilliant (and going down the list of each song) only to be interrupted with, "uh uh. It's One of Our Submarines is Missing". He may have even thrown "tonite" at the end of what he thought was the name of the song. Oh well. He was polite for the rest of the show even if our favorite TD songs were wrong.

Well, there's always going to be a few twits no matter where you go... but for the most part, our audience was great for Mr. Dolby's section of the show. The only folks that kinda ticked me off were the ones who left during BT's half. There was a group sitting behind me that were chattering in whispers about how they'd maybe stay for a couple of his songs, then head out. See, the audience was excellent for Mr. Dolby, but a few of them were, indeed, rude to BT... wether they meant any harm or not. But there wasn't any totally overt rudeness... well, except maybe one drunk guy I, fortunately, could not hear or failed to notice. x.x

And the folks that left during BT's section.. their loss.

Some of the same stuff happened at the show I was at. Personally, I think it's rude to leave in the middle of a song in that kind of setting. At least wait until a song is over. *Shrug*

I agree - bums on seats / stools / feet on floor until performance is over.... well, unless it stinks?

Moving on - I enjoyed dreaming in colour - I'd like to hear a little more attack I supoose, a little more complexity, but you got the basic stuff in place for later assaults? And what you layered in was well presented and well composed. A great piece for my first visit!

I stayed for every last note of our concert, I was just so happy it was both of them ^_^ I've been a fan of Mr. Dolby since I was little, watching his videos on MTV in the early 80's (My fav is still Radio Silence). But I found the concert while looking at BT's Myspace page. BT, who's music i also adore, and who's just a great guy in general ^_^ I was there to see them both... my only regret was that I didn't bring a camera to get a picture of them together ;_;

I actually screenshotted it out of a game called Amplitude (Sequel to FreQuency)... which is where I first found BT oddly enough. It was a music game in which you essentially put songs together by correctly playing the sequence of sounds in each track. In Amplitude, you get to design your little DJ, and it'll play instruments based on whatever track of a song you're performing. This was the avatar I designed for myself. I used to go by DJ Kirby on the Amplitude forums =)

And yes! Next time, I'll bring a camera... AND a video cam, darn it!

That game.... My freind "raver Matt" used to play that game constantly. He was good at it as all heck! I just couldn't handle all the swirliness, and crazy Tron stuff for too long. Then with all the techno beats on top of that, it became instant migraine ever time I watched him play.
